Why P-Cable

Conventional 3D seismic data acquired by the petroleum industry have yielded a wealth of new insight and greater understanding of geological structures and processes.

The P-Cable 3D Seismic system is a newly-developed system for acquisition of high-resolution 3D data.

This technology has proven data quality, surpassing conventional 3D and equal or better than high-resolution 2D.

P-Cable 3D Seismic AS

P-Cable 3D Seismic AS (est. 2008) is an R&D company devoted to commercializing the patented P-Cable 3D seismic technology. This technology has been in development since 2001, lead by Volcanic Basin Petroleum Research AS (VBPR) in cooperation with the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS), Fugro Survey, Oslo (Fugro) and the University of Tromsø (UiT). These institutions now hold licenses to operate the P-Cable 3D seismic system.  The technology is now proven, with eight 3D cubes having been acquired using three different P-Cable systems.  Benefits of the P-Cable include:

  • Low-cost high-resolution true 3D data
  • Deployable from small vessel (30m or longer); only two winches required for 24 streamers
  • High production rates – up to 25 sq Km/day
  • Rapid deployment and retrieval – 1-3 hours
  • Survey multiple targets on same cruise
  • Easily reconfigurable to 2D system

We strongly believe that both industry and research institutions will benefit from cost-efficient acquisition of high-resolution 3D seismic data, and we are now ready to bring the P-Cable system to market.  To achieve this goal, P-Cable AS Seismic has recently teamed with Geometrics, Inc. to commercialize the P-Cable system, based on their very successful GeoEel system.  Based in San Jose, California, Geometrics has been manufacturing marine magnetic and seismic exploration equipment for over 40 years, and is the exclusive manufacturer of the P-Cable system.
